This paved pathway, starting at the former Boston and Lowell Railroad, is a great way to explore Somerville.
The Somerville Community Path – a continuation of the Cambridge Linear Park – is popular among walkers, runners and bicyclists. There is a movement afoot to extend the Somerville Community Path all the way to the Charles River to join the Charles River Bike Path.
We recommend starting your ride in Somerville’s Davis Square, which is a fantastic place for people-watching, shopping, dining and enjoying cultural events and theater:
Grab a bike at the Davis Square Bluebikes station.
Head into Davis Square on Elm street, ride along the square and then take a left onto College Ave.
Take your first right to enter the Somerville Community Path. Enjoy the sights along the way, hop off for a quick workout on the new path exercise equipment or stop for a picnic.
Continue along the Somerville Community Path, crossing Willow Ave and Cedar St until you reach the end of the path.
Here, you can turn around and head back the way you came, returning your bike to the Davis Square Bluebikes station.
If you wish to venture off the path instead of turning around and heading back to Davis Square, you can exit the path at Lowell St by taking the ramp up to the sidewalk and heading left on Lowell St. You can explore a variety of area parks, such as the Somerville Junction Park and Edward L. Leathers Community Park, or you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants.
The total length of the Somerville Community Path is 0.8 miles. This 1.6 mile round trip route usually takes most people 15 to 25 minutes traveling by Bluebikes.
