Bike the Extra Mile to Improve Your Mental Health, Courtesy of Blue Cross

Thanks to Bluebikes title sponsor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, riders can get outside and experience the full benefits of biking with a free Adventure Pass each Sunday in May. Here’s what you need to know about the initiative:

Free Adventure Passes with Blue Cross’ “Miles for Mental Health”

Outdoor exercise, such as biking, is proven to positively impact mental and physical health. The Mayo Clinic has found that participating in regular exercise can ease stress levels and improve sleep, which is often disrupted by stress, depression, and anxiety. As we approach Mental Health Awareness Month and National Bike Month this May, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is shining a light on the link between outdoor exercise and improved mental health through its title sponsorship of Bluebikes.

Starting Sunday, May 1, which is National Ride a Bike Day, Metro Boston residents and visitors can take advantage of free Adventure Passes across the Bluebikes system all day by downloading and opening the Bluebikes app on a mobile device and selecting “Adventure Pass.”

On each ensuing Sunday through Memorial Day weekend, riders can use a new code to gain access to their free Adventure Pass, courtesy of Blue Cross, from any of the nearly 400 Bluebikes stations across the system’s 11 municipalities:
• May 8: BlueMiles08
• May 15: BlueMiles15
• May 22: BlueMiles22
• May 29: BlueMiles29

Share a Ride with Friends & Family

As part of “Miles for Mental Health,” Bluebikes riders can take advantage of Blue Cross’ “Take a Ride, Give a Ride” promotion. Any rider who takes a trip on May 1 will receive a free Adventure Pass to give to a friend or family member, reinforcing the importance of supporting and reaching out to those who may be struggling with their mental health. Riders will receive a code via email.

Win a Free Annual Membership

Riders will be able to track how many miles they ride in May with the Bluebikes App and anyone who rides over 25 miles* between May 1st and May 31st will be entered into a raffle to win one of ten free Annual Bluebikes Memberships, courtesy of Blue Cross, which encourages residents to try Bluebikes and enjoy outdoor exercise. Get out there and get riding!
