Transportation can be a significant challenge for residents planning to exercise their right to vote, including those in underserved or underrepresented communities. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is helping to improve access to the polls by once again offering complimentary Bluebikes trips on Election Day (Tuesday, November 2).

Throughout the day, Metro Boston residents can take advantage of free rides by downloading and opening the Bluebikes app on a mobile device and selecting “Get a Pass” for unlimited two-hour rides.

Removing barriers to the polls

A recent study demonstrated that lack of access to a car is a significant obstacle to voting. Professors from Harvard University and Boston University conducted a poll of voters and found that, among those without an automobile in their household, 61% did not vote in a recent general election while only 24% voted in person.

“We’re proud to help remove transportation barriers as citizens exercise their right to vote. We hope residents who plan to vote on Election Day will take advantage of complimentary Bluebikes rides.” Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross
